Iron Flame: Chapter Summary and Spoilers (Chapters 57-66)
Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros
Chapter Summary & Spoilers (Chapters 57-66)
The Bite-Sized Version

We start with Violet having the most awkward library sleepover ever after discovering her boyfriend Xaden’s been basically a human lie detector this whole time. Like, he could read people’s intentions with his second signet power (major invasion of privacy much?). When confronted, he’s all “but I stopped once you became more than just the General’s daughter!” which is… sweet? Maybe? Still mortifying though!
Then we’ve got this whole tense meeting situation where Navarre (you know, the neighbor nobody invited to the block party) shows up basically begging for help while trying to look tough about it. And because that wasn’t enough drama, Brother Brennan shows up to absolutely demolish their mom emotionally. But wait, there’s more! They find ZOMBIE WYVERNS with mysterious rune stones making them rise from the dead because apparently regular wyverns weren’t nightmare fuel enough!
Speaking of drama, let’s talk about the spiciest gym session ever – Violet and Xaden doing couples therapy but with DAGGERS. It’s all very “stab first, talk feelings later” until Xaden finally spills about his mom ghosting him at age 10 and why he kept his mind-reading powers secret. Then Violet has this big galaxy brain moment and realizes everyone’s been looking at the wrong target – it’s not Samara in danger, it’s Basgiath! Plot twist level: 100!
And then… oh honey, THEN we get to the part where Jack Barlowe decides to win “Worst Dragon Rider Ever” by literally STABBING HIS OWN DRAGON IN THE NECK to bring down the wards. We’re still in therapy for that scene, thanks Rebecca Yarros! Turns out he’s been a venin this whole time, playing the longest con ever, and now there’s a thousand wyverns heading their way because why not make everything WORSE?
The battle scenes? PURE CHAOS. We’re talking Violet going full Thor with lightning strikes, her mom helping with convenient rain (finally some useful parenting!), and an assassin venin doing parkour across dragons like it’s some kind of aerial ninja warrior course. Violet’s out here playing the most dangerous game of dragon hopscotch ever to save her friend Sawyer, only to end up getting force-choked like she’s in a Star Wars movie.
But hold onto your emotional support dragons because it gets WORSE. We find out Andarna’s been holding out on everyone – she can breathe fire AND change colors like some kind of draconic chameleon! Then Violet’s mom pulls the ultimate sacrifice move to power the wardstone and we’re NOT OKAY.
And just when you think your heart can’t take anymore – BAM! – Xaden turns venin! We get his POV and honestly? It’s a whole “choose between becoming evil or watching the love of your life sacrifice herself” situation and we’re still not over it.
The Bit-Sized Version

Chapter 57
In this bit we enter a tense dragon riders meetup where Navarre is begging for help defending their borders. All while Violet Sorrengail juggles family drama, her mind-reading boyfriend’s confession, and the fresh horror of zombie wyvern. Let’s dive into this plot twists packed chapter of Iron Flame!
- This chapter starts with Violet spending a not-so-cozy night in the library after learning some game-changing info about Xaden Riorson. Get this – his second signet has been able to read people’s intentions this whole time. When Violet confronts him about it, he admits that yes, he totally knew when she wanted to kiss him that night by the wall (mortifying much?) but swears he stopped doing it once she became more than just General Sorrengail’s daughter.
- Fast forward, our crew is meeting at the military outpost of Athebyne (remember where we learned about the Assembly of the Revolution) to speak to the Navarre council. They’ve brought quite the squad to this meeting – ten dragons in total, with four hiding in the trees like the world’s largest game of hide-and-seek.
- The Navarrian delegation shows up led by Lieutenant Colonel Melgren and Violet’s mother, who’s looking rough – pale, exhausted, the whole nine yards. There’s this tense standoff where everyone’s trying to look tough while secretly counting their weapons. The big reveal? Melgren has seen a vision that Navarre falls at Samara during the solstice. He’s basically asking for help while trying to make it sound like he’s doing them a favor. But here’s where it gets wild – Brother Brennan shows up out of nowhere and absolutely DEMOLISHES their mom emotionally by basically saying “sorry not sorry, you reap what you sow!”
- The family drama is OFF THE CHARTS when their mom realizes all three of her kids are alive and standing against her. She pulls Violet and Sister Mira aside afterward to hand over this journal (written in Morainian because apparently one dead language wasn’t challenging enough for our girl) and drops some cryptic warnings about failing new wards and Warrick’s lies.
- The chapter ends with a genuinely creepy discovery – they find these strange rune-marked stones in dead wyvern that are somehow making them reanimate (because regular wyvern weren’t terrifying enough). Violet handles it with lightning strikes, but this raises some SERIOUS questions about what they’re up against in this second book.
Chapter 58
In this bit we get a steamy sparring gym session with Violet Sorrengail and Xaden Riorson hashing out their trust issues while Violet realizes the real enemy attack isn’t targeting Samara at all – plot twist, it’s headed straight for somewhere close to our hearts…
- So, we find our girl storming into a sparring gym at 10 PM, absolutely fuming after getting nowhere with her brother Brennan about the whole Samara situation. And who’s waiting there like the broody dreamboat he is? Xaden, of course! What follows is essentially couples therapy with daggers (which, let’s be honest, might spice up regular therapy sessions). After a delicious moment where Violet gets the upper hand with a blade to his throat – Xaden finally comes clean about some major plot twists. His mother pulled a disappearing act when he hit the big ten years old. He also reveals that his second signet powers showed up a month after his shadow abilities, but he kept that particular ace up his sleeve because he didnt want to get murdered, which fair.
- They decide to set some new rules. No more secrets. They’re going full transparency or nothing at all. And Xaden’s like “Here’s my heart, please don’t demolish it,” which is honestly adorable for our usually stoic commander.
- Fast forward to December 19th, and Aretia is basically a military prep school on steroids. Everyone’s sporting new conduits, with Violet rocking a fancy bracelet upgrade that keeps her from losing hers in combat. Cat’s apparently become the rune queen of the year, and the forge is working harder than us trying to finish these summaries before Onyx Storm comes out.
- During Battle Brief, Violet has one of her classic “wait a minute…” moments. While everyone’s focused on Samara and its potential fall during solstice, she realizes something major: it’s all a distraction! The real target? Basgiath War College and the Vale! dramatic gasp
- The chapter ends with this moral dilemma: should they help Navarre (who, let’s remember, haven’t exactly been winning any “Neighbor of the Year” awards) or risk becoming just as bad as them by leaving civilians to die? Violet, being our morally upstanding protagonist, realizes they have to help – even if it means putting Violet’s friends in danger.
Chapter 59
In this bit, Violet Sorrengail thought showing up uninvited with dragon riders to warn Violet’s mother about Basgiath War College’s defenses couldn’t get more uncomfortable, when “evil turned nice turned back to evil (maybe?)” Jack Barlowe crashes the party.
- Our squad of rebellious riders is staging what I’d call an “unauthorized field trip” to Basgiath because they’re convinced the wards are in danger. We’ve got Violet’s friends, Xaden Riorson, plus Andarna (who’s being a peak teenager about having to wear a harness and ride with Tairn). Brother Brennan’s staying behind because he’s not thrilled about the whole “rushing into danger” plan (buzzkill much?), and the first year students are told to stay put despite their protests.
- After an 18-hour flight, they arrive at Basgiath War College to find it suspiciously under-staffed. Like, “where is everybody?” levels of empty. They confront Violet’s mother who’s giving major “I don’t have time for this” energy, but eventually agree to check the new wards after some quality mother-daughter guilt tripping.
- They get down to the ward chamber and – surprise, surprise – there are dead guards everywhere. And who should make a dramatic entrance but Jack Barlowe riding Baide – though something’s definitely off about the dragon’s usually golden eyes, which have gone creepily opaque. What follows is pure chaos: Violet’s mother gets thrown into a wall like a ragdoll, Ridoc plays hero by creating an ice wall but gets his hands severely burned in the process, and then – in a twist that would make Game of Thrones proud – Barlowe actually stabs his own dragon in the neck! The whole thing culminates in this WILD sequence where her blood hits the wardstone, and the whole thing comes crashing down.
- The chapter ends with the wards falling. The most ominous part? Jack’s comment about Violet being “right on time” – looks like this whole thing was a trap and they played right into it.
Chapter 60
In this bit we open in the aftermath of Jack Barlowe killing his own dragon Baide (going to need therapy for that one), while Violet Sorrengail and Xaden Riorson watch in horror. Jack reveals there’s a thousand wyvern incoming, while Violet and her friends scramble to prepare for an epic final battle.
- Our squad discovers that Jack isn’t just your garden-variety bad guy – he’s turned into a venin. Not only did Jack manage to turn venin while inside Basgiath War College’s supposedly impenetrable new wards, but he’s been playing the long con since before Violet’s first wielding incident in the gym. Talk about your long-term investment in evil!
- The plot twists thicken when they discover Jack’s been playing magical hide-and-seek, planting lures throughout campus to guide an incoming army of about a thousand wyvern straight to their doorstep. We learn this delightful news courtesy of Dain Aetos, who did some memory-diving in Jack’s head before Jack tried to drain him like a juice box, leaving grey handprint burns on Dain’s arms. Oh, and the best part? They only have about ten hours before everything goes sideways, and reinforcements from Melgren won’t arrive in time.
- This leads to the most intense Battle Brief ever, where General Sorrengail jumps into crisis mode, organizing everyone into defensive grid positions like she’s playing the world’s most intense game of battleship, while completely shooting down Violet’s suggestion to guard the broken wardstone. In the midst of this impending doom, we get treated to a surprise return from Brother Brennan, complete with a cavalry of fliers who apparently subscribe to the “ride or die” philosophy when it comes to their drift members.
- The chapter wraps up with a glimmer of hope when Violet realizes her older brother might be able to fix the broken wardstone with his signet powers. With the help of her squadmates, she gets permission to have the wardstone chamber guarded, though with only hours until the attack, their odds aren’t good. It’s basically giving major “making a last stand” energy.
Chapter 61
In this bit Violet’s trying to zap an endless horde of wyverns with the help of Violet’s mother’s special storm. All while some extra edgy venin assassin decides to parkour across Violet’s dragon and head straight for her…
- So we’re at Basgiath War College, and our squad is perched on a ridgeline above campus, watching what has to be the most intimidating sight ever – hundreds of wyverns approaching at dawn. Violet’s mother is waiting below with the rest of the squad (including sister Mira and Teine), while brother Brennan is in the ward chamber below ground, working on getting mending the wardstone. The first and second wings are guarding the Vale, while our main crew is protecting the airspace above campus.
- The situation is giving Violet major memory of the Battle of Resson flashes (not the fun kind), and everyone’s pretty much terrified – Ridoc helpfully points out he’s either about to have heart failure or soil himself. Relatable, honestly.
- Then things get interesting – there’s unseasonable warm rain, which turns out to be Violet’s mother’s way of helping her daughter access her signet powers. Talk about maternal support! Before they head into final battle, we get a sweet moment between Violet and Xaden Riorson that’s basically “don’t die or I’ll kill you” but make it romantic.
- When the battle kicks off, it’s CHAOS. Violet’s pulling lightning strikes left and right like some kind of dragon rider Thor, while the squad works in perfect coordination. There’s this particularly cool moment where they pass a broken dagger around like a game of hot potato to make sure everyone stays armed.
- But because nothing can ever be simple, a second wave shows up with what appears to be assassination attempts specifically aimed at Violet. A dark wielder manages to land on Tairn’s neck while Violet’s stuck in her saddle (because of course the buckle chooses NOW to malfunction). Just as Mr. Creepy Eyes is about to do his thing, friend Rhiannon Matthias comes in with the save of the century, pulling a mid-air leap from her dragon to Tairn. The chapter ends on this cliffhanger because apparently Rebecca Yarros wants us all to develop heart conditions. Classic.
Chapter 62
In this bit Violet Sorrengail plays extreme hopscotch between dragons to save her friend from becoming wyvern chow, only to end up getting force-choked by evil wizards while a sneaky black dragon bursts through a cliff.
- So there’s Violet Sorrengail and her friend Rhiannon Matthias in the thick of battle, fighting dark wielders while riding dragons in the pouring rain. They manage to take down one bad guy, with Rhi pulling some seriously impressive combat moves that have Violet’s friends both worried sick and grudgingly impressed.
- The action kicks into high gear when their friend Sawyer gets into major trouble – and by trouble, I mean a wyvern literally bites off part of his leg (yikes!). Our girl Violet struggles through what might be the most extra rescue ever: she JUMPS from dragon to dragon mid-flight (somewhere, her insurance provider is having heart palpitations) and manages to save Sawyer by essentially skydiving with him until Tairn catches them. And they say dragons aren’t good at playing catch!
- After getting Sawyer to safety (shout-out to gryphon riders Maren, Cat, and Bragen for the assist), Violet finds herself in a seriously sticky situation. A dark wielder named Wynn shows up with some VERY interesting intel – apparently, someone has specifically ordered that Violet’s body be captured alive. Before we can figure out what that’s all about, another dark wielder appears, takes out Violet’s conduit bracelet thing, and has her suspended helplessly in the air with no way to unleash her lightning strikes.
- The chapter ends on a massive plot twist with Violet being magically immobilized, unable to use her signet powers, and a mysterious shape emerging from the cliff face that’s transforming into what appears to be a black dragon.
Chapter 63
This bit has Andarna surprise barbecuing a bad guy, while Violet Sorrengail discovers some sus math in an ancient journal; cut to everyone arguing about battle brief strategy until Xaden Riorson dramatically announces the enemy is actually there for him…let’s get into it!
- So we start with Andarna pulling the ultimate “surprise, I’m actually deadly” move by not only breathing dragon fire (which is news to everyone, including our girl Violet), but also absolutely demolishing a dark wielder – we’re talking full-on dragon barbecue followed by some casual decapitation. Talk about making an entrance! The best part? She’s gone all goth black dragon with scales that let her blend into cliffs like some kind of camouflage power.
- The scene at Basgiath War College is ROUGH – we’re talking injured people everywhere, makeshift squads being cobbled together, and general chaos. But wait, there’s more! Our favorite scribe and one of Violet’s friends, Jesinia, comes running up with some MAJOR tea about those journals they’ve been studying. Apparently, there’s a discrepancy between Lyra’s and Warrick’s journals – one mentions seven types of dragons, the other six. And since there are only six dragon riders dens (black, blue, green, orange, brown, and red), this is kind of a big deal. Violet struggles with some sort of revelation about this but keeps it locked up tight behind her mental shields. Very mysterious!
- The chapter culminates in a tense standoff between our heroes and the military leadership. General Melgren’s brilliant strategy is basically “let’s use some cadets as dragon bait” (rude), but Violet’s like “Hey, what if instead of sacrificing everyone, we try my wardstone idea?” She’s practically begging her mom to trust her on this one.
- Just when things couldn’t get more intense, the leader of the venin shows up on a massive wyvern, and based on Violet’s reaction, she might recognize this mysterious figure from her dreams (spooky!). The chapter ends with Xaden, absolute man that he is, basically telling Melgren “help us or die mad about it” and heading out with Violet to buy her time. Why? Because apparently this whole attacking army has been waiting specifically for… Xaden.
Chapter 64
This bit is basically “How to Break Your Reader’s Heart 101,” come on Rebecca Yarros!!
- We start with Violet Sorrengail and Xaden Riorson at Basgiath War College, facing down a final battle that’s already littered with dragon riders and wyvern corpses. They’re particularly concerned about this Sage – you know, the one who pulled a Houdini at the Battle of Resson and was also causing trouble at the cliffs. The enemy’s been clever, holding back their dark wielders until the squad was nearly burnt out.
- Here’s where things get extra spicy – Violet realizes she only has enough resources to power either Basgiath’s wards or the revolutionary town of Aretia’s. When she gives Xaden the choice, he hits her with that absolutely heart-melting “you are my home” line (We’re not crying, you’re crying!).
- Then comes this fascinating interaction with Codagh, General Melgren’s black dragon, where Violet confronts him about keeping the real secret because apparently “dragonkind protects dragonkind” – very mysterious! She manages to get his agreement to help with the new wards, which is crucial but readers still dont know what the secret is that he holds.
- In the wardstone chamber, we get this MASSIVE revelation about Andarna – turns out she’s actually a seventh breed who can change her scale color, and she waited 650 years to hatch specifically for Violet because she heard about this “weakling daughter” who would have “the mind of a scribe and the heart of a rider.” Love a bit of full circle destiny!
- The real gut-punch comes when Violet starts literally burning herself out trying to power the wardstone. Violet’s mother shows up and reveals her master plan – using Sloane Mairi, who is a siphon, to transfer her own power into the stone. The kicker? Mom knows this is going to kill her but goes through with it anyway, dropping emotional bombs about Sloane’s past (apparently Mom executed Sloane’s mother) and how everything she’s done has been to protect her children. Meanwhile, Violet’s getting these terrifying emotional feedback loops from Xaden’s dragon Sgaeyl that suggest he’s in serious trouble on the battlefield, which just adds to the complete emotional chaos of watching her mother sacrifice herself.
- The finale is absolutely devastating – Mama Sorrengail drops these heart-wrenching final words about how her kids are “everything we dreamed you would be” (excuse me while we ugly cry), just as Brother Brennan and Sister Mira arrive to witness their mother’s sacrifice. With the help of her squadmates, the power transfer succeeds, the wards go up, and all that’s left of their mom is this haunting black flame burning atop the wardstone, because apparently Rebecca Yarros decided we weren’t emotionally damaged enough already.
Chapter 65
This bit has our hearts shattering in more way than one…just read on.
- We open with Violet Sorrengail and crew in the aftermath of what went down in the ward chamber. There’s this heartbreaking scene where brother Brennan is carefully draping his flight jacket over Violet’s mother’s body. The group starts leaving through the tunnel system with Violet trying to reach Xaden Riorson through their bond, but she realizes he has his mental walls up. Xaden’s dragon confirms he’s alive, which is like the bare minimum of good news but hey, we’ll take it!
- Meanwhile, everyone’s celebrating the big win because, when you take down the wardstone power source, those wyvern start dropping fast. Friend Rhiannon Matthias shows up looking like she just walked out of an action movie, and we get the battle brief: Ridoc’s fine, Imogen’s sporting some new battle scars, Quinn’s got a face that’s seen better days, and leadership is playing the world’s most intense game of tag with the fleeing venin.
- And just when you think we’ve hit peak drama, one of the biggest plot twists yet – the moment that’ll have you screaming at this second book. Xaden’s doing his best brooding-hero-at-the-edge-of-a-cliff impression. When Violet finally gets to him, he won’t even look her in the eyes and keeps muttering that she should stay in Basgiath War College and she should be scared of him. She finally forces him to look up and…drum roll please… Xaden has RED RINGS around those dreamy dark eyes of his.
Chapter 66
XADEN
This bit has us in Xaden Riorson’s POV as he recounts what led to him turning VENIN.
- We start off with Xaden having a nightmare about this super intense fight scene where he’s literally suspended in the air by the leader of the venin, completely drained and in pain from using too much of his signet powers. Xaden’s dragon Sgaeyl is freaking out overhead, and Violet Sorrengail is somewhere under Basgiath War College trying to deal with the new wards.
- The leader who they thought was the Sage, is actually just a powerful general, which means the Sage is still out there. The general is totally playing mind games with Xaden, being all “I’ll give you one last chance” and threatening Violet. Poor Xaden is trying his hardest to fight back with his shadow powers, but he’s just too worn out to do much damage. Then he feels through their bond that Violet’s planning to sacrifice herself to save him (classic Violet, right?). In desperation to save her, he feels this power source from the ground and goes to grab it, even though in absolute heartbreak Sgaeyl is screaming at him not to.
- Xaden jolts awake in bed with Violet sleeping next to him. Xaden sneaks out and heads down to the prison cells under Basgiath. He goes to talk to Jack Barlowe (ugh, that guy) and asks if there’s a cure for this curse they both have. Jack’s all smug about it, saying there’s no cure, just some antidote for a serum and no one knows about it.
- The whole chapter ends on this really dark note where Xaden is telling Jack, “I’d rather die than become one of you.” And Jack hits us with the ultimate one liner “And yet, you just did.”
